Sustainable Consumption Patterns (SCP)

Sustainable Consumption and Production refers to "the use of services and related products, which respond to basic needs and bring a better quality of life while minimizing the use of natural resources and toxic materials as well as the emissions of waste and pollutants over the life cycle of the service or product so as not to jeopardize the needs of future generations” (Oslo Symposium, 1994). Sustainable Consumption Pattern (SCP) and production is about resource efficiency and decoupling economic growth from emissions, and environmental degradation.

Human being have over stepped 4 out of the 9 planetary boundaries including climate change, land-system change, biodiversity loss and interference with the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles (Adam Hinterthuer, 2015). This has occurred due to the unsustainable models of economic growth and lifestyles. The transition towards low-carbon and green economy require partnerships, rethinking consumption models and bringing the efficient innovations.

IoU considers SCP an important pillar for nature inclusive urban settings hence for the next three years it aims to transform community consumption patterns for conservation of natural resources and its products by;

  • Engaging multitude of actors such as media, parliamentarians, academia, youth/adolescents/children, private sector and CSOs in transforming community consumption patterns through behavioral change initiatives and campaigns
  • Exploring and promoting alternatives to improve consumption patterns that help to conserve resources such as water, energy, forest and land
  • Highlighting alternative business models through partnerships with private sector and promoting action oriented research
